Tips for Pet Owners During Tough Times
If you find yourself pinching pennies during tough financial times, these tips and proper planning may can help you reduce the cost of pet ownership in many ways.
Food and Supplies
- If you are considering changing your pet’s food to a less expensive brand, be sure to talk with your veterinarian about the best method of switching foods.
- When looking for animal supplies and toys, remember to shop the local thrift stores, dollar stores, and garage sales. These are great sources and will save you money too. Tips for inexpensive toys can be found by searching on “dog toys” or “cat toys” at
The Humane Society of the United States.
- The Hinsdale Community Service is another source for people and pets in need. They provide interim assistance to a seven-village service area, to those who seek temporary help.Individuals and/or families must qualify for this program, based on need and income. To learn more about this program or for more information, please call 630-323-2500 or go to
Hinsdale Community Service.

Save on Vet Bills
- Keep your pets safe inside or on a leash when walking outdoors. Animals allowed to roam freely are more prone to accidents and resulting veterinary bills.
-Let your veterinarian know that finances are tight and ask that he or she prescribe only the most vital vaccinations and preventative health care to keep your pet healthy.
-Consider pet health insurance to minimize the shock of an expensive bill from the veterinarian in case of an unexpected illness or injury.
-For more information on low-cost pet care tips, search for "veterinary care" at
The Humane Society of the United States.

Home Properties
Pet Rent
If you can’t find a rental that will take you and your pet, contact friends and family to see if there is anyone who would be able to care for your pet until you are financially secure. Ask your veterinarian if you can receive low-cost boarding.
Giving Up Your Pet
If you are experiencing financial difficulties and you must relinquish your pet, don’t wait until the last minute. Many shelters and rescue organizations have appointment and waiting lists and can better
accommodate your pet’s needs with advance notice.
The Hinsdale Humane Society provides an owner surrender service for people who are unable to keep their pets. There is a $50.00 surrender fee to help cover costs, such as food, medical care, shelter care and fresh bedding and toys.
All efforts are made to make the transition process as stress free for the pet as possible. HHS Staff and volunteers are trained to comfort and care for pets during this period of change. All animals are evaluated by our medical and behavioral experts for our adoption program. This allows us to make the best possible adoption match.
If you need to give up your pet, please contact us at 630-323-5630 x 0, to schedule an appointment. Please be prepared to answer questions regarding your pet’s history and provide applicable veterinary records.
