Internship Programs
The Hinsdale Humane Society's internship program offers a scholarship of $1,200 to qualified college undergraduate students interested in a career in veterinary medicine. The selected intern will gain hands-on experience while working with shelter staff and volunteer veterinarians at HHS giving him/her the hands-on experience so important in gaining entry to schools of veterinary medicine.
The intern will work 40 hours per week (weekends required) for three months and perform all duties required of regular animal care employees, including but not limited to:
1. Perform preliminary physical exams (fecal test, check for fleas, ear mites, obvious skin or health problems)
2. Administer vaccinations
3. Administer medication to ill animals
4. Assess animal temperament/behavior
5. Handle difficult animals
6. Counsel/educate prospective and current pet owners
7. Offer solutions to behavior problems
The intern will be awarded a scholarship of $1,200 upon successful completion of the program. Selection of student interns will be based on interviews with the HHS shelter operations manager.
